Donald M. Temple started a non-profit, community outreach social organization created to uphold the African concept of the extended family as well the Seven Principles of the Nguzo Saba (Umoja - Unity; Kujichagulia - Self-Determination; Ujima - Collective Work/Responsibility; Ujamaa - Cooperative Economics; Nia - Purpose; Kuumba - Creativity; Imani - Faith).
The first pillar emphasizes a strengthened bond between men and women of African descent through positive social interaction, creating a brotherhood and sisterhood. We seek to encourage these bonds through the many social programs that we offer at Howard University. Our second pillar is community service, U-CAN (the Ubiquity Community Action Network) is the community service arm of Ubiquity and includes both members and non-Ubiquitarians who strive to meet the needs of our community. Previous and ongoing project include S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat), Martha’s Table and N Street Village to name a few. Academic excellence, our third pillar, is promoted in all areas with the hope that our brothers and sisters will use their chosen vocations for the good of us all. We encourage students, faculty, members of the community, and professionals to exchange their wealth of knowledge and ideas in organized forums.
Ubiquity has more than four hundred members world wide including undergraduate and graduate students at Howard University and ninety alumni who reside in the DC Metropolitan area. We consider ourselves to be a close-knit family, sharing in weddings, births, and other life crossroads, lending support to each other in life’s valleys. Our membership includes people from various religious backgrounds; from all over the U.S., other parts of the Diaspora and Africa; as well as members of Greek-lettered organizations. Moreover, we are represented in a number of professions, including law, art, medicine, film, business, technology, an education to name a few. All of us have united for a common interest – restoring our people to their traditional greatness! We invite those near and far to join us in the Family and Organization of Ubiquity!
